Harman’s automotive division is dedicated to improving the driving experience through audio and electronics excellence, and is showcasing many of its advanced and “green audio” technologies for both conventional and electric vehicles during the 80th Annual International Motor Show in Geneva, running March 4 to 14, 2010.
In the new Rinspeed UC urban commuting concept car, Harman will demonstrate the future of mobile infotainment and communication. Built upon Harman’s powerful new scalable infotainment platform, the Rinspeed UC can send and receive e-mails from the car, access a home music library online, reserve a parking space over the Internet, or book tickets without time lags or awkward user interfaces. The vehicle also features the ground breaking, high-performance GreenEdge® sound system from Harman Kardon®, which successfully unites the dual objectives of uncompromised sound quality with maximum energy efficiency. In addition, innovative HALOsonic electronic sound synthesis technology generates custom-tailored engine sound in and out of the otherwise almost completely silent electric car.
This technology ensures safety for pedestrians and cyclist alike, while also offering passengers an authentic driving experience. (Read more in our press release.)
Harman also brings its high efficiency sound systems to the high performance tuning company RUF. The latest RUF offering is an electric version of a Targa-top Porsche 911 packed with an Infinity® GreenEdge® high performance sound system featuring 11 speakers and 8 channels of Class D sound. Founder Alois RUF is a long time fan of the Infinity brand, and the premium sound system emulates the experience created by the Infinity loudspeakers of his home stereo. The RUF electric sports car also incorporates Harman’s HALOsonic technology to create custom-tailored sports engine sounds that enhances the driving experience while also promoting safety and security of pedestrians. Furthering the possibilities of e-mobility, Harman and German utility company RWE have partnered to demonstrate “smart” charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
The two companies will demonstrate how electro-vehicles of the future will not only recharge at a curbside electric "fueling" station, but receive streaming audio, video or other online digital content through the power grid via a high bandwidth Internet connection. A Harman-developed communication and control unit has been developed that brings off-board services into the car, and helps realize the convergence of vehicle infotainment systems with a person’s home network.
