Innovations in the Area of Navigation

Features such as 3D navigation, photo-realistic point-of-interest (POI) view and Internet-based navigation are set to increase onboard comfort in cars of all classes.

When it comes to the visualization of route guidance, extended navigation functions, known as augmented navigation, will continue to dominate the next device generations: a camera on the front of the car transmits an image of the actual street onto the display and the driver instructions are overlaid over this “live”, further enhancing orientation.
The “electronic horizon” feature also enables our navigation software to provide important information for driver assist functions, such as the overtaking assist function.

In future, it will also be possible to update navigation data even faster: as part of an international automotive working group, HARMAN Automotive Division is working on a standardized map format that will facilitate the partial updating of navigation software, speeding up the update process considerably.

In March 2011 HARMAN launches innovative docking navigation system. The new vehicle-specific Becker® MAP PILOT gives drivers a feature-rich and upgradeable navigation solution without compromising the convenience of a highly integrated in-dash OEM solution. The Becker MAP PILOT® is linked via a lockable, secure cradle to the car’s on-board electronics. It uses the vehicle’s infotainment screen and the instrument cluster in the cockpit to display maps and menus and is operated via the familiar steering wheel controls and the turn/push control. The navigation unit can be updated online anytime using the Becker® MAP PILOT Webshop site www.beckermappilot.com which enables maps and software to be upgraded and personalized information such as points of interest (POIs) to be downloaded simply and conveniently.
The new Becker® MAP PILOT navigation system is premiering in the new Mercedes-Benz SLK and in the new generation of C-Class. More.
